More Gees and Stories

Today I added two photos of Louisa Gee and a Story  (her obituary) on Family Tree.

Also the Death announcement mailed to her half-sister Caroline Gee McGavin.  Robert McGavin married two of Lysander’s daughters by two different wives.  Caroline was living at the time in Glenn, Idaho. This may have been Glenn’s Ferry or perhaps another, now forgotten, city in Idaho. Caroline’s last child was born in 1903 in Freedom, Wyoming and she died in Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Since she lived in Bingham county Idaho in 1910 according to the census, I assume that Glenn, Idaho was in this neighborhood.

I placed three sources on her record and then as a source I placed a history of Caroline by her daughter Jesse Loveland.  I had a link in discussions, which I placed in 2010, but now that one can add links to Internet sites in sources, I moved the link so that it doesn’t have to be copied into the browser search bar.

I also added history on Robert McGavin, which I had in my archives.

I had a little story about Caroline in PDF format, which I converted to a Word document and added to stories.

I posted a time line for Erasmus Gee.  He was Erastus Rowe Gee’s oldest brother. There are already stories that I have placed on his record.

I also added a history of Erastus Rowe Gee by my father.  Unfortunately the document was unfinished.

Athother notification from Watch

Someone changed the record for Rozelia Gee McGavin, the first child of Lysander Gee and Theresa Bowley Gee. This caused me to look at the record more closely.  I found errors. I submitted the following e-mail to Support at Family search.

Rozelia Gee McGavin Person identifier: K246-DZ4 has 54 combined records.

KL7X-DF2 Record number 52 has no data. Lists no contributor.

K246-DZ4 Rozelia Megairu Record number 1. Contributor: LDS Church membership. This record has the dates of birth and of death of Rozelia Gee.  Where did surname come from? Could it be a misspelling of McGavin?

MG2H-M2D Record number 16 has two names listed Rozelia GEE and Mozelia Bornley Gee Contributor: Family Search.  Is this a misspelling of Rozelia Bowley Gee?

Since the rest of the records are essentially correct and I cannot change the above records, is there any way that Family Search can correct the misinformation?

Well something is better than nothing.  We will continue to clean up the records.

Family Search Watch

Each week I get an e-mail from Family Search on any activity on the records that I have put a watch on.  I have placed a watch on some of the records that I have been working on. In the past I have found that very helpful, because some patrons combine records that should not be combined or enter changes that may or may not be correct.  I do not know why I feel I need to be the guardian of the records, but I guess that I have a desire that everything should be correct even if I am wrong.

This week I got another e-mail.  Usually it is 4 or 5 changes, but this week there were 53 changes.  The majority were changes by Family Search with minor changes such as correcting names and spellings and places of birth or death.  It was somewhat time consuming to go through all 53 records, but it was worth it because I found the following records that need attention.  I even found two individuals who need ordinance work.  I made a list, so that if my computer crashes I will have the information on a website, or as the present terminology would have it, on the Cloud.( A fancy term for web based backup.)

Abigail Hill Person identifier: LHLM-PJB her many husbands

Sophia Mack Person identifier: LHZX-ZLY where does this information come from?

Ebenezar Mack Person identifier: LZV8-YBJ multiple spouses and duplicate parents.

John Dodds Telford Person identifier: KWJX-YCR two sets of parents.  The one set is incorrect.

Sarah Maria Sayles Person identifier: KWJP-HQJ 7 sets of parents 3 extra spouses.

Find Grave marker for Graham Coltrin Person identifier: KWJP-HCC supposedly buried in the Centerville Cemetery.  His name was on On Find a Grave, but no photo of the headstone. Needs research

William Jasper Kerr Person identifier: KWJP-CSM has three wives, one unknown with a child John Campbell Kerr.  Needs research.

Solomon Gee Jr. Person identifier: LZPP-GVP has two spouses.  Look and see if the spouses need to be combined.

August Bernard LCRZ-8TW and wife Gertrude LCRZ-DSD need temple ordinances done and daughter Alice LCRJ-THR needs to be sealed, but she only died recently.

Sara Gee (Sarah) Person identifier: 2736-R71 has two sets of parents.  Solomon Gee and both his wives.  This needs to be corrected.

Susannah Moody Person identifier: LHZ8-FJ5 has two sets of parents.  This needs research and correction.

Betty Catherine Bruce Person identifier: 2MGH-H5K needs a definite date of death and place of death. I will have to look in my database.

William Gee Person identifier: LZJG-NS1 has an extra spouse that doesn’t belong.  I have written the person that placed that record, but he has so far not taken action.

Elam Luddington Person identifier: K24C-FH6 has three sets of parents. This needs research.

Edward Gee Person identifier: LC1Y-J1N has two children that need ordinances.

Martha Bingham Person identifier: LZD7-W9P needs to be combined with Mrs Solomon Gee Jr. MQRC-26F Her birth date is listed as 1694.

Deborah Gee Person identifier: KNSS-KG3 has one record with gender unknown.

This will take some time to do.  As I complete each item on the list, it will appear in my next watch e-mail entitled “Weekly FamilySearch changes for things you are watching” with me as the contributor.

 

Caroline Gee McGavin The Conclusion

Yesterday I had some time after my teaching assignment at the missionary department so I hiked up the hill to the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum. They have a history department with donated histories of Utah Pioneers. Caroline Rowe Gee McGavin had some documents listed in the on-line catalog that I wanted to look at. I was able to find two histories in the archives there. Both were written by the same author, Jessie McGavin Loveland, Caroline’s daughter. They were identical to the history that I have given you a previous link to. Attached to one of the histories was a one-page document by her granddaughter Hattie Birch.

Then this morning I received the following from Support at Family Search.

Dear Ivin Laurence Gee,
We have edited the record for Caroline Rowe Gee PID KWCV-H3F and have removed the relationship to Francis Gates PID LH52-317 as her spouse.

Yes Frances Gates was a female. Please see the previous e-mail.

I think that the fact that I outlined the reasons in the previous e-mail should be sufficient.

1. Caroline was married to Robert McGavin at the age of 13. She was still married to Robert at the time of the alleged marriage to the non-existant Frances Gates and living in Idaho at the time of the alleged marriage to the non-existant Frances Gates in Tooele and had 9 children by Robert McGavin after the alleged marriage.

2. All of the dates in this alleged marriage and Frances Gates birth dates are approximations.

3. There are no discoverable records of this marriage.

4. Frances Gates as a male does not appear in any census records or death records from that time.

5. I have e-mailed all of the contributors and none have responded.

6. There are 12 contributors to Frances Gates Records. Four of these have email addresses. Six of the records come from the Ancestral File and one comes from the Pedigree Resource File and four are from Family Search. One of the submitters to Ancestral File was llgee2825381. I am sure that this was my uncle Lynn Lamar Gee who is deceased. E-mail to this address returned the following response.

I would expect this because he is deceased.

Looking at the combined records for Caroline Record #8 contains 18 combined records listing both Robert Mc Gavin and Frances Gates as spouses. Record # 25 is from the Ancestral File submitted by my uncle Lynn and has both spouses listed. Records # 32 and 33 both have both spouses listed. Record # 37 has only Frances Gates listed as a spouse and was submitted by Family Search. Record # 42 has only Frances Gates listed as a spouse and was submitted by Family Search and probably ancestral file. Record # 55 was submitted by Deanna Birdzell Record # 58 lists only Frances Gates as the spouse and was contributed by Family Search.

Please confirm what your relationship is to this family.

This is a direct quote from the previous e-mail. I am the great grandson of Erastus Rowe Gee, Caroline Gee McGavin's older brother.

Let me now go through the relationship in detail. Lysander Gee and Maryette Rowe Gates Gee had 9 children. Erastus Rowe Gee was the second child and second son. His son was William Erastus Gee. His son was Ivin Lafayette Gee. His son was me, Ivin Laurence Gee.

Caroline Rowe Gee McGavin was the seventh child of Lysander and Maryette.

This would make her my great grand aunt.

There are two GEDCOM files on the internet listing Caroline Gee McGavin. Only one by Elbert Richard Brower lists a Frances Gates. He gives no sources for the entry and no dates of birth, death or marriage.

It is my contention that Frances Gates as a male does not exist. Someone picked up this name and it was probably picked up by a number of other individuals and perpetuated with out anyone checking the validity of the data.

The sealings of Caroline to Frances were done in Cardston in 1992 and Los Angeles later.

I do not know what more information that you need to correct this error.
